When School’s Out For Summer In Colorado, The Kids Who Depend On Free Or Reduced Lunches Can Go Hungry


In Colorado, almost 400,000 students are eligible to receive free or reduced-priced school lunches during the school year, but only about nine in 100 of those students are getting lunch during the summer, according to a new report published by a national organization that studies hunger. Some families may not know the program exists in the summer, while others may face transportation barriers, said Taylor Washington, community engagement manager for Hunger Free Colorado. Colorado added 190 additional sites between 2013 and 2018, which resulted in 160,000 more meals being provided throughout the state, she said.

Rule change on food stamps could exclude nearly 4,200 Denverites from federal assistance


What the Trump administration calls a money-wasting loophole may be a safety net for some families in Denver and beyond. The U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates about 3 million people across the country would lose food stamps if the change goes through. State officials estimate that of the more than 456,000 people who get food assistance in Colorado every year, more than 33,000 would be ineligible under the proposed rules.

On Tuesday, the Trump administration proposed changing how states determine who qualifies for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), also known as food stamps. The U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates that 3.1 million people would lose their benefits if the new rules take effect. In Colorado, state officials estimate the change would impact 33,514 residents, the majority of which are families with children.

Free Summer Meals Program Aims to Prevent Academic Slide


Summer should be a fun time for kids, but many Colorado children face greater risks of going hungry after school cafeterias close their doors. More than 600 sites across the state are stepping up to make sure all kids have the nutrition they need to return in the fall ready to learn. Garage sales and GoFundMe campaigns are nice, but districts want better fix for school lunch debt


In Colorado and the rest of the country, fundraisers to cover the cost of school meals are popping up as district officials struggle to balance their desire to feed hungry children with their responsibility to pay the food bills. The online fundraising site GoFundMe lists nearly 70 such meal debt campaigns, with names like “Phil-lunch-thropy,” “ and “Let the Kids Eat.”

Colorado school districts turn to converted buses, donated PB&J to feed more kids over summer


Classes may be winding down for the summer in Colorado, but work is far from over for the people in charge of school lunches. Denver Public Schools is making preparations to serve breakfast and lunch to kids at 62 sites across the city, said Leonard Apodaca, the district’s area supervisor for food services. Each year, DPS officials evaluate which neighborhoods have the most need for free meals, and work with the city so they don’t overlap with meal programs at recreation centers, he said.

Room for Improvement in Colorado Food-Stamp Participation


Colorado counties are making progress getting SNAP benefits – the program formerly known as food stamps – to low-income residents, but there’s still room for improvement. Colorado ranks 43rd nationally with just 60 percent of low-income people receiving benefits, below the national average of 73 percent, according to a new report from Hunger Free Colorado. Anya Rose, a policy analyst with the group, says increasing enrollment is important because the program is the first line of defense against child hunger.
