Free Meals! No Child Need Go Hungry This Summer


A round of applause for Hunger Free Colorado which provides thousands of FREE meals daily to children under the age of 18. More than 500 sites are scattered across Colorado at parks, recreation centers, libraries, schools and churches, with FREE breakfasts, lunches, suppers and/or snacks available to kids through August.

Summer Meals Open to All Kids; No Registration Required


Summer activities for kids are at full pitch, and Colorado parents may not realize that many of the same pools and recreation centers where kids meet up with their friends also are offering free, nutritious meals for anyone age 18 and younger. Ellie Agar, interim communications director for the group Hunger Free Colorado, said the federally funded summer-meals program serves up healthy food at more than 500 community sites across the state.

Month-long fundraiser combines hiking, ending hunger in Colorado


Throughout the month of July, hiking enthusiasts are invited to hit the trails to help end hunger. Hike to End Hunger, the annual month-long event created by Hunger Free Colorado, is back this month. From July 1 to July 31, Colorado residents are invited to participate in this statewide fundraiser, which focuses on helping those who struggle with low-paying jobs, job loss or other difficulties.

How many people in Colorado struggle with hunger?


Ellie Agar, Communication Director with Hunger Free Colorado, says hunger affects more people than most realize. According to the organization, nearly one in ten Coloradans struggle to get enough to eat. This includes about one in seven children. Many of these children lose access to the breakfast and lunch programs they get through school during summer months. Agar says this means they are also often losing out on proper nutrition. But, Agar says there are a lot of ways we can all help.

“Colorado Proud” Produce Heading to Pantries


Colorado farmers are set to see a big boost in local spending, and more residents will have access to their produce, after the state’s Joint Budget Committee earmarked $500,000 for purchasing so-called Colorado Proud goods. The new funding was spurred in large part by the Colorado Food Pantry Network, launched in 2014 by Hunger Free Colorado. Survey data showed that most families wanted fresh fruits and vegetables, but pantries couldn’t meet those needs without additional resources. The funds will be distributed by a third-party community foundation selected by the Colorado Department of Human Services.

Hunger Free Hotline Helps Coloradans Find Food


Help is just a phone call away for families, seniors and other individuals who are seeking food assistance anywhere in Colorado. Hunger Free Hotline, is a FREE bilingual “one-stop” resource that helps you find food assistance programs in your area. This can include food pantries, free meal sites and nutrition programs such as food stamps. Hunger Free Colorado’s food assistance navigators provide help based on each caller’s need.

Unauthorized Immigrants Shy Away From Signing Kids Up For Food Aid


Advocates say these families have grown increasingly fearful of sharing their information with a government agency and would rather face food insecurity than risk enrolling in SNAP. Anya Rose is a bilingual food assistance navigator with the hotline for Hunger Free Colorado, and speaks with families of unauthorized immigrants on a daily basis. Rose tells them their information cannot be shared with other government agencies, like Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE. Still, some are unwilling to take what they believe is a serious risk.
