Colorado SNAP recipients fear Trump budget proposal
Millions of people nationwide depending on food stamps will see benefits slashed if Congress agrees to President Donald Trump’s current budget proposal. The Trump administration said it wants to replace cash benefits with boxes of government food. More than 400,000 Coloradans will feel the pinch if the proposal is approved, according to nonprofit Hunger Free Colorado. “It feels like I’m rationing on a regular basis,” Denver SNAP recipient Andrea Fuller said.

1.4 million more free lunches would be served to Colorado kids under proposed legislation
A bill making its way through the Colorado state legislature has the potential to give free meals to about 18,000 Denver Public Schools students from low-income families who were not receiving them before. If it succeeds, the bill would expand the School Lunch Protection Program, which provides free lunches to kids in preschool through fifth grade who would otherwise pay for reduced-cost lunches, through the eighth grade.

Statewide plan sets five-year goal to end hunger
A plan to end hunger across the state in five years aims to connect those struggling to buy food with federal assistance programs. Enrolling in federal assistance can ease the pressure on tight family budgets, said Martha Johnson, director La Plata County Department of Human Services. Hunger is a widespread problem with nearly one in 10 people in Colorado struggling to buy food, according to the statewide plan written by a coalition of groups.

Congress is expected to begin work soon on the $140 billion farm bill, but there are concerns that some conservatives are targeting nutrition programs for cuts. Food programs such as SNAP, WIC and school lunches are a big part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s budget, and advocates fear they could become a target.
