On June 9th, Governor Hickenlooper visited a summer food site in Alamosa as part of Summer Food week. The Governor was joined by Darlene Barnes, Regional Administrator of USDA-FNS Mountain Plains; Frank Martinez, Executive Director of the Boys and Girls Club of the San Luis Valley; Robert Alejo, Superintendent of Alamosa Schools; Kathy Roger, Mayor of Alamosa; and Ruth Stemler, State Director of Share Our Strength, among other community members such as the board of directors of the club.
We had a terrific visit. As I have mentioned before, Alamosa serves fabulous food. They also do an amazing job meeting the needs of the children in the community. This summer, Alamosa School District nutrition services expanded Summer Food Service to include the Boys and Girls Club of the San Luis Valley. By doing this, they have increased the number of children they are serving by almost 200! The Boys and Girls Club is providing a safe and engaging environment for children when school is out of session.
Thank you to everyone for making this visit possible! And big thank you to Alamosa Schools Nutrition Services and Boys and Girls Club for meeting the needs of children in the community!
