DENVER (Feb. 25, 2013) – Hunger Free Colorado received a $25,000 grant from The Food Research and Action Center (FRAC) to support their anti-hunger work in Colorado. The funds will help raise awareness about the issue of hunger in Colorado, as well as create change to move the state closer to the goal of ending hunger for all Coloradans.

“Hunger is a serious problem in our state, with more than 800,000 Coloradans at risk of hunger. Many are struggling to put food on their table right now, and we work to ensure our most vulnerable neighbors— including working families, children and seniors—have access to nutritious, affordable food,” said Kathy Underhill, executive director for Hunger Free Colorado. “We’re pleased to have FRAC as such a strong supporter and partner in our work to make Colorado hunger-free.”

The grant will enable Hunger Free Colorado to intensify its effort to expand utilization of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as food stamps, and child nutrition programs, such as school breakfast, after-school snacks and suppers, and summer food; to advocate for key changes in federal, state and local policy and practice in nutrition programs; to engage in public policy research and analysis; to raise awareness of the extent of hunger; and to enhance the role of nutrition assistance programs as a solution to hunger and poverty.

Hunger Free Colorado is the state’s leading anti-hunger organization leveraging the power of collaboration, system change, policy change and social change to end hunger in Colorado. FRAC is the leading national nonprofit organization working to improve public policies and public-private partnerships to eradicate hunger and under-nutrition in the United States.
