$90,000 from Kaiser Permanente, $50,000 from ConAgra Foods Foundation
DENVER (July 25, 2013) – Hunger Through My Lens is a new advocacy project of Hunger Free Colorado that sheds light on the reality of hunger in the Denver metro area. Kaiser Permanente and ConAgra Foods Foundation both have funded this project, which provides a platform for Coloradans to share their stories. It will launch Aug. 1, with the first exhibit at the central branch of the Denver Public Library.
Nine women, ranging in age from early 20s to mid-60s, are the first group of participants of Hunger Through My Lens. Digital cameras are the main medium for participants to express themselves and put real stories to the overwhelming statistics surrounding hunger. Traveling exhibits will display their photographs and stories at locations around Denver.
“Hungers impacts individuals, families and communities throughout Colorado. We hope the stories and personal experiences shared via Hunger Through My Lens will encourage people to visit and engage in critical dialogue,” said Kathy Underhill, executive director for Hunger Free Colorado. “We’re pleased to have ConAgra Food Foundation and Kaiser Permanente as such strong supporters and partners with this new project aiming to create change in how we view and understand the issue of hunger.”
Hunger Free Colorado received a $50,000 grant from ConAgra Foods Foundation and a two-year, $90,000 grant from Kaiser Permanente to support Hunger Through My Lens. Kaiser Permanente is also a founding funder of Hunger Free Colorado.
“It is impossible to live a healthy life if you face a daily struggle to find your next meal. Hunger affects individuals’ abilities to thrive at work, school and in the community, “said Sarah VanScoy, Kaiser Permanente Pediatrician and Hunger Free Colorado Board Member. “Kaiser Permanente is proud to support this important project as part of our mission to improve the health of our community.”
“ConAgra Foods Foundation applauds Hunger Free Colorado for enabling people to raise their voices and share stories, so that we all can better understand the issue of hunger in this country,” said Kori Reed, executive director for ConAgra Foods Foundation.
Hunger Free Colorado is the state’s leading anti-hunger organization leveraging the power of collaboration, system change, policy change and social change to end hunger in Colorado.
