Growing up as a white kid in Missouri, I was taught an exclusively situational form of racism – rude words and actions from a few bad people solved by saying, “That’s not okay.” I was not taught that racism is a systematic issue or that I unknowingly participate in and support systems that reward my skin tone and create barriers and disadvantages for BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color).
It’s uncomfortable to learn about our role in racist systems and it’s upsetting to acknowledge the generational suffering racism has caused. But with these hard feelings, there’s hope. Here are five podcasts to start your journey as we hike for a healthier and more just Colorado.

Our country imprisons more people than any other and a disproportionate number of them are Black. Let that settle in. The Mass Incarceration podcast explores the origins of our criminal justice system, how racism shapes it, and how America created a culture of mass incarceration.

2. 1619
The 1619 podcast “examines the long shadow” of the first ship carrying 20 enslaved Africans to the English colony of Virginia. Explore how that forming country, our country, is affected on every level by the hundreds of years of slavery that followed.

3. The Stoop
The Stoop podcast shares “conversations about what it means to be black and how we talk about blackness.” It celebrates black joy with the mission to dig deeper into stories we need to hear more about.

4. Come Through with Rebecca Carroll
Join host, Rebecca Carroll, for 15 conversations about race and how it’s playing out in 2020, an election year. “Race is at the center of every issue – healthcare, jobs, climate change, the media, and more.”

5. Scene on Radio: Seeing White (Season 2)
Scene on Radio explores the renewed embrace of “raw, undisguised white-identity politics,” racial inequity in schools, housing, hiring, and white supremacists. It also answers questions like:
- Where did the notion of whiteness come from?
- What is whiteness?
- What is whiteness for?
